First Annual “Ron Van Clief Cup” International Mixed Martial Arts Tournament
Ron Van Clief, the Black Dragon, presented the First Annual “Ron Van Clief Cup” International Mixed Martial Arts Tournament at Antilles School on St. Thomas on Saturday October 11, 2008. The Virgin Islands has, for its relatively small population, more than its share of famous athletes and this includes the martial arts. No less than six martial arts Grandmasters were in attendance and in action at the tournament. The five were Grandmaster Ronald Duncan “father of Ninjitsu,” Grandmaster John Davis “Super Weapon,” Grandmaster Tayari Casel “African Gung Fu Pioneer,” Grandmaster Soke Arthur Dennery “Aikjitsu Pioneer,” Grandmaster Louis Jackson Karate Jitsu Educator and Ron Van Clief “The Black Dragon.” The purpose of the tournament was “to promote the principles of the American Martial Arts, providing an opportunity for practitioners of all styles to meet and compete against each other in a spirit of cooperation and harmony.” Ron Van Clief aka The Black Dragon, a name given to him by Bruce Lee is a 10th degree Red Belt and founder of the Chinese Goju System. Ron was five times a World Champion and fifteen times a All American Champion. He has established more than 25 schools in 18 countries and has appeared and starred in more than 40 film and television productions such as “The Last Dragon,” “ Black Dragon Revenge,” “Super Weapon,” “Black Dragon Fever,” Fist of Fear, Touch of Death,” “Oz,” “The Sopranos” and many others.
