St. John Virgin Islands Trails: Turtle Point TrailExcerpted from St. John Off The Beaten Track © 2006 Gerald Singer
The half-mile Turtle Point Trail runs between Turtle Bay on the north end of the Caneel Bay Resort and Caneel Hawksnest Beach. You can pick up the Hawksnest Bay Trail from the southern end of the beach at Caneel Hawksnest. The Turtle Point Trail follows the rocky shoreline of Hawksnest Point passing through dry forest and coastal terrain. Along the way you’ll enjoy refreshing tropical breezes and impressive views. The rugged natural setting of this area contrasts well with the manicured environment of the rest of the hotel grounds.
Visitors to Caneel Bay should enter at the main gate and tell the guard that they intend to walk the trail. Park in the visitors lot and walk to Turtle Bay The Caneel Bay Hotel grounds contain some of the most fascinating and beautiful plant life on St. John. Some of the more interesting trees and specimen plants are labeled with signs providing identification and information. The restored ruins of the old sugar plantation located near the parking lot are also well worth a visit. At several places along the trail you will find strategically placed benches where you can sit, relax and appreciate the spectacular scenery made up of islands, cays, rocks and reefs lying within crystal-clear, multi-hued Atlantic waters.
